UN Secretary General Congrats Nicaraguan People on Independence Day

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his congratulations to the Nicaraguan people and the government of the Center American country headed by the president Daniel Ortega.

“Please accept my warmest greetings on Independence Day. The United Nations joins in celebrating this special day with the people of the Republic of Nicaragua,” said Guterres on a letter sent to the Nicaraguan head of state.

The UN chief pointed out that this is an occasion to “recall the importance of promoting the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing the climate crisis and enhancing opportunities and hope for all.”

They initiate formal acts to receive the Torch of Independence at the border with Nicaragua.

In this regard, Guterres said it is time to solidarity and seek shared solutions to promote peace, sustainable development and human rights for all.

“In recognition of this important day, let us commit ourselves to building a better future for the people of the Republic of Nicaragua and for all the peoples of the world,” reads the letter.

The UN secretary general said take the opportunity to reiterate the expression of his highest consideration to president Daniel Ortega.

Nicaragua was part of the Spanish Captaincy General of Guatemala, which included the territories from Costa Rica to present-day Chiapas (in Mexico). Nicaragua, like Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica, celebrate the signing of the Spanish Crown’s Act of Freedom, which occurred on September 15, 1821 and is known as the Independence of Central America.
